Shane Heirman, the head men's basketball La Lumiere School in La Porte (Ind.) has one of the most talented teams in the high school ranks.
Heirman's squad holds the No. 4 spot nationally in the Boys Basketball Top 25 Composite Rankings. They are currently in action at the City of Palms Classic in Fort Meyers (Fla.)
One of Heirman's stars is future Illini Jalen Coleman-Lands, a 6-foot-4 shooting guard and a four-star recruit who committed to the Illini back in September. How good has Coleman-Lands been?
According to Heirman, better than most expected and he is getting better every time he steps on the court.
"I'm a little biased here, but I also know the game of basketball," Heirman said. "Jalen is the best pure shooter in the country,"
Ranked No. 38 overall in the 2015 class, Coleman-Lands is part of a four-man recruiting class that includes wings D.J. Williams and Aaron Jordan, and big man Darius Paul.
Illinois coach John Groce has yet to land his future point guard, so moving Coleman-Lands to that position when he arrives in Champaign is a possibility, though Heirman sees him as more of a wing or combo.
"Jalen is a natural two guard, but he's working on all aspects of his game," Heirman said. "I'm sure at some point when he gets to Illinois, he will have to make that transition, but I have faith in coach Groce, because I know they will also run things for him to get shots as well."
Groce has a great relationship with Heirman, who took over the program after former coach Alan Huss accepted an assistant coach position at New Mexico. La Lumiere is loaded with DI players, including two from the class of 2016 that Groce has offered.
6-foot-8 power forward Nolan Narain grabbed an offer from the Illini over the summer during the July evaluation period. The other is 4-star big man Isaac Humphries, the No. 26 ranked player nationally.
When Coleman-Lands committed he was the highest rated recruit on Groce's resume while at Illinois. He's not content with his current top 40 rankings, however.
"Jalen has put himself in great contention for the McDonald's All American game," Heirman said. "Not only is he the best shooter in the class, the kid is averaging 34 points per game.
Teams are doing everything possible to stop him with a box-and-one to multiple other gimmick defenses. He's seen it all and still able to play within our team concept and score like that."
Coleman-Lands is having the year to date that Illini fans expected; the post season accolades will bode well for Coleman-Lands and the Fighting Illini program.
