Offensive guard Zach Shackelford has a list of favorites, which includes the Fighting Illini.
Just back from a Midwest swing that included visits to Illinois and Purdue, the 6-foot-4, 295-pound Shackelford lists Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Iowa State, Arizona State, Colorado, Illinois, Purdue, Tulsa, and Houston.
"It was an awesome visit," Shackelford said. "We toured the campus and saw everything. We sat down with coach Beckman and talked to him a while. And of course we were with Coach Brattan the whole time. I think he's a great coach. He's put together a good offensive line."
Ranked a 3-star prospect by Rivals.com, Shackelford is spotted as the No. 31 offensive guard in the nation and No. 74 player in the state of Texas overall.
The visit was an overnight trip for Shackelford, and he got to meet current players and get a feel for the campus life at the UI. He also watched some film of Illinois offensive line play, and learned how he would fit in the system.
"We met a few players and watched them work out that afternoon," Shackelford said. "I stayed with Austin Schmidt and a couple of guys at their apartment."
Illinois offered Shackelford back in April. The Illini offer put them in the mix, and Shackelford added the school to his summer travel plans.
Shackelford talked about the criteria he considered when breaking down the list of nine schools at the top.
"The offensive line coaches, and the head coaches and their philosophies," Shackelford said. "I try to visit all of these schools, and it gives you a better feel."
Look for a final decision from Shackelford by the end of the summer, with a few more trips in his plans.
"It will be before this season, so probably before August," said about his timetable for a commitment. "We will probably go to Tulsa, and maybe Iowa State, Kansas State, and Oklahoma State."
