In the latest of our position group previews, Orange and Blue News takes a look at the Illinois defensive line.

Defensive line coach Mike Phair has to replace a lot of talent, and he has an influx of freshmen who will play key roles.

The Illini will have an entirely different look on the defensive line in 2017. No other position group lost more to graduation.

Illinois is replacing five graduated seniors, including NFL Draft pick Dawuane Smoot. Other losses include pass-rushing specialist Carroll Phillips, former fifth-year transfer Gimel President, and defensive tackles Rob Bain and Chunky Clemens.

Phair plugged in returning veterans into starting spots to open camp, but they have been pushed hard be an incoming freshman class that includes seven 2017 signees.
