Illinois commit Tim Walton from Detroit Cass Tech is just back from his official visit.
One of the top prospects in the Illini's 2016 class, Walton said the visit went well and he learned a lot about his future school.
"I had a lot of fun meeting all of the coaches again, getting to know them, and spending some time with them," Walton said. "It was great being around the players. What stood out to me was the players and how they bond together as a team."
The 6-foot-2, 224-pound Walton is ranked the No. 29 inside linebacker in the nation, according to Rivals.com. He committed to Illinois in August.
A chance to see the field early on was one of the things that appealed to Walton about Illinois.
"I'll see some playing time next year with Mason Monheim leaving," he said. "I have a chance as a true freshman to come in and play."
With linebacker coach Mike Ward no longer part of the program, Walton doesn't yet know who his position coach will be. However, he has a strong bond with his recruiter, defensive coordinator Tim Banks.
"Coach Banks and I have a strong relationship," Walton said. "He's a great coach and a great guy. As far as the linebacker coach, they haven't said who it will be yet, but I haven't really asked about it. I just trust Coach Cubit whoever he picks."
Walton helped lead perennial power Cass Tech to a 14-3 record this season. The Technicians were upset by Romeo Division 1 state championship game. Walton posted a team high 9 tackles in the contest.
Next up for Walton is an appearance in the Blue-Grey All-American Bowl on Jan. 9 at Raymond James Stadium, home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
"I'm going to be lifting and running getting ready to play in the Blue-Grey game and getting ready for the next level," Walton said. "I also might run track this spring."
