Though it's still early in the process, three Big Ten programs are currently standing out for 2016 linebacker Collin Miller from Fishers (Ind.) Hamilton Southeastern.
Miller is just back from a junior day at Purdue, and he hopes to pick up an offer from the Boilermakers this week. Illinois and Indiana have already extended offers.
"I was at Illinois last weekend and I got an offer," Miller said. "It was a big offer. It's the Big Ten, which is amazing. It just blows me away that I have two offers from Big Ten schools. I grew up watching Illinois and Indiana play, and now I have both of those schools as an offer."
In addition to the three Big Ten rivals, Miller said he is still interested in the other schools who have offered, including Miami-Ohio, Bowling Green, and Ball State.
At 6-foot-3, 230 pounds, Miller lines up at outside linebacker and defensive end in high school. They Illini are recruiting him to play their hybrid LEO position, coached by Al Seamonson.
Miller said he was impressed by the Illini staff during his recent trip to Champaign. He had a chance to chat with Seamonson, head coach Tim Beckman, and defensive coordinator Tim Banks.
"Coach Beckman, Coach Seamonson, and Coach Banks, they are unbelievable coaches," he said. "I really get along with those coaches and I could see myself in the orange and blue. No matter where I play, I will just focus on trying to help the team."
Once visiting recruiting broke out by position, Miller got to spend some one-on-one time with Seamonson and find out more about the position he would pay if he chose to come to Illinois.
"He's a great coach," Miller said. "Me and him were able to sit down and talk about how they run their program, and coach his positions. He said it's not going to be easy if I go there. They are going to push you and make you the best that you can be. He has a great personality, is a laid back coach, and he knows what he's talking about."
With the offer in hand, Miller has an open invitation to make a return trip to Illinois to watch the team go through spring drills.
"They had multiple spring practices that they invited me to come to," Miller said. "They said that spring practices you get to see them coach, interact with the players, and get to see more of the X's and O's. I'll probably be back to a spring practice at Illinois."
Miller's current list of favorites isn't locked in stone. Though Illinois, Indiana, and Purdue are standing out, he wants to take more visits and explore all of his options, so a commitment is far from imminent.
"It will be down the road," Miller said. "I'm not really focused on it right now. I haven't seen all of the schools I need to see yet."
