Future Illini point guard Te'Jon Lucas was able to take in the scene this past Wednesday as Illinois unveiled its newly renovated State Farm Center against Notre Dame. The Milwaukee (Wisc.) Washington star came to watch the game and feel the atmosphere, and walked away pleased with the experience in his future home.
"I thought it was really great to see," Lucas said. "The State Farm Center has come a very long way, and I was glad to be there and I can't wait to play in it when my chance comes."
Although Illinois is not off to an ideal start so far this season, Lucas remains confident that his future squad will turn things around and find a way to make this year a success.
"It is just a work a progress right now," Lucas said. "A lot of key injuries have hurt them this year. They just have to find their touch and make a strong run for the tournament, which I definitely think they will do."
Lucas is itching to get on the court and help the Illini. Known as a highly talented floor general, Lucas expanded on several other aspects of his game that he believes will translate well when he starts his collegiate career, and what he is looking forward to most during his time at Illinois.
"I can bring a winning attitude and a 100 percent effort on the floor every day, first and foremost," Lucas said. "As far as what I bring on the court, I feel like I am really good at seeing the floor and I will bring positive leadership.
"I am just very excited to play at the next level, it's something I've always dreamed of. And I also really look forward to being coached by Coach Groce, and getting to see the Illini fan base every night."
Part of being a strong leader is having the trust of those around you. Lucas has worked hard to build relationships with as many of the current players and staff members as he can, and he confidently says he has a built a strong connection with a majority of his future comrades.
"I have a mutual relationship-a very good relationship I would say-with pretty much the whole team and staff," Lucas said. "They are all really just a great group of guys that I want to be around."
Despite all his enthusiasm to join the Illini, Lucas has his own high school season to focus on first. His team has started strong with a 2-1 record, thanks in large to Lucas, who is averaging 18.5 points, 8.5 assists, and three rebounds per game.
Lucas said he is focused on team goals.
"My goal is winning state," Lucas said. "That is all I am worried about."
