2016 offensive tackle Spencer Kanz from Luxemburg (Wisc.) Casco holds an early offer from Illinois, his first from a Power 5 conference program.
The 6-foot-6, 275 pound Kanz was in Champaign on Saturday for an Illini junior day, along with a several other recruiting targets in the 2016 class.
" It was a great day overall,". "Getting to see everything at Illinois for the first time," Kanz said about the visit. "The best part was probably just talking to all the coaches."
Vaughn and the rest of the visiting recruits were treated to the tour of the campus and facilities, and concluded the day at the State Farm Center to watch the Illini basketball team win in thrilling fashion over Penn State.
Assistants Al Seamonson and Tom Brattan were the main coaches that Kanz got to spend time around while on campus.
"I really liked them, and I liked how they stressed family a lot," Kanz said. "I was with coach Brattan pretty much the whole day but I met with coach Beckmann and talked to coach Seamonson for quite a bit."
The recruiting process is in the early stages for Kanz having just finished off his junior season. Besides the Illini, the top interest is coming from MAC schools and he has a trip to set up to WMU.
"As of now Illinois, Miami-Ohio, Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan are probably recruiting me the hardest. I'll be visiting Western Michigan in two weeks."
Kanz claims no favorites and hasn't set any kind of timetable on his recruitment yet.
More interest from the Big Ten and other Power 5 teams is a given. Kanz has the length and athleticism that teams look for in a left tackle, and the frame to add significant bulk over the next couple of years.
According to Kanz, Coach Brattan said he would fit in nicely on the Illini offensive line.
"He said how he really likes my size and mobility and that they'd love to have me at Illinois," Kanz said.
