2017 PF Theo John holds an Illini offer
Illinois is hot after several top juniors around the Midwest. One big man holding an Illini offer is Champlin Park (Minn.) prospect Theo John.
John picked up the offer in June, and the Illini staff was back in to see him at his high school in October. The next step for the Illini is to get John on campus in Champaign to check out the program in person.
"I don't have anything specific lined up, but I do know Illinois is really pursuing me pretty hard right now," John said. "I'm going to keep all my options open, but I have to say I really do like their program."
A 6-foot-9 power forward, John teams with another Illini target at Champlin Park in 3-star guard McKinley Wright.
Rivals.com has John pegged as a 3-star prospect and the No. 113 player overall in the class of 2017.
Other offers at this point include Iowa, Marquette, Minnesota, Nebraska, Kansas State, and Texas Tech. He is just off of a recent visit to Minnesota, and is also getting interest from Wisconsin.
"The recruiting process is really exciting for me right now," John said. "All these coaches and programs that are interested in me; it's also nice because some of them tell me what I need work on, like my shooting and polishing my skill work."
John is coming off a sophomore season where he started in the post for a loaded 31-1 team. He averaged 8.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks per game. John played for Nike club Howard Pulley on the EYBL circuit.
Illinois assistant Paris Parham is the lead recruiter on John, who says early playing time and style of play will both be major factors in his final college decision.
"I just want to play, get up and down the court," he said. "I love high tempo offenses."
