2016 wing Xavier Sneed from Florissant (Mo.) Hazelwood Central, recently narrowed his college list to five and the Illini made the cut.
For his part, the 6-foot-5 Sneed is playing his recruitment very close to vest and not talking much about it, but he did comment on how he chose a top five of Creighton, Illinois, Kansas State, Wichita State, and Xavier.
"I like my list of five schools," Sneed said. "They all fit my playing style and also all great academically. Each of my five final schools is looking for an athletic wing to come in and play big minutes right way."
Sneed is a 4-star recruit and ranks No. 102 nationally in the class of 2016. His other offers are from Cincinnati, Minnesota, and St. Louis University.
The next step for Sneed is to take official visits to the schools in his top five. He's anxious to get his recruitment over with, so the visits could come soon. Sneed has indicated he will sign during the early period in November.
"I'm not sure about the date of any of my schools, but they will get visits," Sneed said. "I'm kind of tired of the process, to be honest with you."
Sneed gained attention from high major scouts this summer playing for the St. Louis Eagles, a Nike EYBL team that is loaded with talent and Illini targets. The Eagles finished second at the EYBL finals in N. Augusta (SC).
The Illinois staff has stayed in constant contact, even talking to Sneed long distance during their current European tour.
"I talked to the coaches before their first game over there," Sneed said.
According to Sneed, academics and style of play are the two biggest considerations. He talked about some other factors.
"My player-coach relationship is very important," he said. "Also if the coaches can produce an NBA player and the university has that family atmosphere surrounding it."
