Illinois has become active recruiting the state of Texas, signing two prospects from the Lone Star state in the 2015 class. Thus far, the Illini have offered 13 juniors from Texas.
One recent offer is to Cypress Springs (Texas) prospect Donell Dunn, a speedy wide receiver who put up big numbers last fall as a junior.
"I had a pretty good year on the field," Dunn said. "I had 52 catches, 1,232 yards and 11 touchdowns."
At 6-foot, 188 pounds, Dunn is a homerun threat with speed in the 4.4 range. Others extending offers are Texas Tech and Cincinnati.
Texas Tech has emerged as an early favorite. Other major in-state programs such as TCU, Baylor and Texas are expressing strong interest in Dunn.
While the Red Raiders do hold an edge, Dunn said he isn't fixated on the idea of staying in-state.
"I'm not the kind of guy that would stay in Texas just because I'm from here," Dunn said. "I'm going to go where I see the best opportunity for me."
Dunn has visited Baylor, LSU, and Texas, and is visiting Texas Tech this weekend. Now that he has the offer, he says he would like to make the trip north to Illinois to check out the program in person.
According to Dunn, the Illini have put themselves strongly in the mix.
"Illinois has a very good chance with me," Dunn said. "I plan to make a visit to Illinois this summer. I'm just not sure when yet."
Though he is un-ranked by Rivals.com thus far, Dunn easily projects as a solid 3-star prospect. On film, he shows a great release, and the ability to get separation in a hurry.
Look for Dunn to ride out the recruiting process, and make his final college decision during or after his senior season in high school.
