C.J. Walker is on the road this June checking out some of his top schools, including a stop in Champaign to see Illinois this weekend.
A 6-foot point guard from Indianapolis Arsenal Tech, Walker has the Illini in his top seven along with Florida State, Missouri, Pitt, Butler, Xavier and Wichita St.
"It was a really good visit," Walker said about the trip to Illinois. "The coaches were great. I got to meet the entire coaching staff, see the facilities, and I met the players. It was really fun."
Walker is ranked a 3-star prospect and the No. 148 player in the nation by Rivals.com. The Illini got in the mix after offering Walker in late April after watching him run with EYBL club Spiece Indy Heat.
With upcoming trips planned to Florida State and Butler, Walker intends to let his recruitment play out until close to signing day. He could be back at Illinois for an official visit later this summer.
"I want to commit in November right before my school season," Walker said. "I'm going to take all five of my official visits, but I'm not sure where yet. Illinois is a really good school, and they are in my top seven right now. I might set an official visit sometime in August."
According to Walker, the Illini staff did a good job familiarizing him with their program and showing him specifically where he would fit. Walker said he likes Groce's guard-oriented offense.
"After they showed it to me on film - they showed me some highlights - I think I would fit in really well," Walker said. "They set a lot of ball screens and they make plays for their shooters. I've done that the past year on my AAU and school teams. I can score pretty well off of ball screens, so playing at Illinois would be great."
Walker plans to major in business, and he was able to tour the Illinois business school on Sunday and speak to academic advisors. He also got a tour of State Farm Center and an overview of the ongoing renovation project.
He was previously committed to Purdue before opening things back up, so Walker wants to see as many schools as he can and be 100% sure about his choice this time around. Early playing time, a good fit, and a chance to play meaningful games in March will all be factors.
"I just want to be comfortable with the school and the coaching staff," he said. I want a coach who develops players. I ask the coaches to give me a depth chart, and tell me who would be coming in with me. I want to go someplace where I'll be playing with good players."
