3-star prospect Tim Walton from Detroit powerhouse Cass Tech was on campus in Champaign for an unofficial visit to Illinois on Friday.
A 6-foot-2, 224-pound linebacker, Walton recapped what stood at most to him about the visit to Illinois, which included a complete tour of the school and facilities.
"The visit went very well," Walton said. "I love the coaching staff. The facilities and campus were phenomenal. I was really impressed with the academic portion. My major is one of the best that they have. That's one that really intrigued me."
Walton plans to major in psychology, and the academic reputation of the school is a big factor him.
Rivals.com ranks Walton the No. 23 player in the state of Michigan. He says the other schools recruiting him the hardest are Toledo, Miami-Ohio, Bowling Green, and Navy. He also holds an offer from Cincinnati.
Walton said he spoke with inside linebacker coach Mike Ward and talk about his potential role on the Illini defense. According to Walton the Illini are looking at him as an inside linebacker or the defensive end / linebacker hybrid position.
"Coach Ward told me they are looking at a "MIKE" or a "LEO", and that I would be a big part of their defense," Walton said. "They said I fit the program and what they're looking for."
On film, Walton is an athletic linebacker with size and a mature body. He should raise his stock this season with more productivity on the field.
Walton was named one of the Top 10 defensive performers at the Rivals Camp Series presented by Under Armour in Cleveland this past April. The Illini staff also saw him at the Sound Mind Sound Body Football Academy camp in June.
"I'm a big, fast, and athletic linebacker," Walton said. "They like that I'm big and fast enough to play Big Ten football. They saw me at the Sound Mind Sound Body camp and that really sealed the deal on my offer. "
