Illini first to offer 2016 tight end

Illinois is first to offer 2016 tight end Brendan Scales from Wildwood (Mo.) Lafayette HS. Scales picked up the offer while on an unofficial visit Saturday to watch the Illini take on Minnesota for Homecoming.
OrangeandBlueNews caught up with Scales at Memorial Stadium immediately after he was notified of the offer by tight ends coach Alex Golesh.

"It's pretty exciting," Scales said about the offer. "I just found out about it ten minutes ago. Coach Golesh shook my hand told me I had an offer. It's my first one, so it feels great."
The 6-foot-4, 220 pound Scales helped lead the Lafayette Lancers into the Missouri Class 6A state playoffs. They defeated St. Louis Mehlville 38-12 last Friday and have a second round game vs. 8-1 Eureka this week.
Scales is a two way player for Lafayette, and he could play on either side of the ball at the next level. He prefers offense, however, and is likely being pursued as a tight end by the Illini. Scales catches passes from his older brother Cameron, who is a senior dual-threat QB.
"I play tight end, defensive end, and a little bit of running back," Scales. "I have over 400 yards receiving, 11 TDs, and around 40 tackles on defense. Tight end would be ideal (in college)."
Though Illinois is the first offer so far for the junior Scales, he is hearing from several other D-I schools. The trip to Champaign was his first campus visit this season, but he is tripping to a Big 12 team on Saturday.
"I'm hearing from Indian Iowa, NIU, K State, and Missouri," Scales said. "Illinois is the only school that I've been to for a game so far. Next week I'm going to Kansas State."
