Illini crank up recruitment of JUCO tight end

Illinois clearly has high interest in junior college tight end Andrew Davis from Iowa Western. The staff was recently at the school, and could be back on campus in Council Bluffs again this week.
The interest appears to be mutual. The 6-foot-6, 220 pound Davis

The Reivers' Blue - White Spring Game is set for Friday at will be played at Lewis Central HS in Council Bluffs.
Looks for Davis to be a major part of the offense and take a big jump in his first year as a starter at Iowa Western. He projects as a "flex" type of tight end who can play the tradition role, or line up in the slot and create mismatches.
"It's been going pretty good and the offense is working well," Davis said. "Right now, I'm starting tight end. The offensive is involving me quite a bit. They are using me attached on the line and also split out at receiver. So they are using me both ways and I'm on the field quite a bit."
Besides Illinois, Davis has interest from Louisville and Miami-Ohio, and he recently picked up a big offer from Texas. When Illinois drops in this week, it will be their second trip since the evaluation period opened on Apr. 15. The recruitment is led by assistant Alex Golesh.
"Illinois stopped by for a scrimmage," Davis said. "I'm talking to coach Golesh from Illinois and that relationship is going good. I went on a visit there during spring break and looked at their facilities and all that. I really like the program that they have."
There's no question that Illinois would love to secure a commitment from Davis on this trip to Council Bluff, but so far Davis is still planning to give it a little more time. Recruiting is fluid, however, so this is most definitely a recruitment to keep a close eye on.
"I think I might just play out this fall and see what happens," Davis said. "I think I'll take some official visits and really get to know the programs and coaching staffs before I make a final decision. I'm just waiting right now to see what else happens.
"I'm just looking for a school where I'll fit in their offense and be able to be a stand-up tight end. But also be able to be attached and blocking. It has to be a good fit academically also."
Davis won't be the only Iowa Western player that the Illini will check on. Reivers' safety Charlie Rogers is also a major target. Both Rogers and Davis hold Illinois offers, both have visited, and both have great things to say about the program.
"We talked, and we really both liked Illinois," Davis said. "We both feel like we would fit in the program really nice. But we are just waiting to see what happens."
