Illini offer 2017 all-purpose running back
The Illinois staff is out on the recruiting trail, and one recent stop was to Florida power St. Thomas Aquinas in Fort Lauderdale.
While at the school, Illini assistants Ryan Cubit and Mike Phair extended an offer to 2017 all-purpose running back Mike Epstein, who played last fall at Weston (Fla.) Cypress Bay.
"I got called out of class and was told that Illinois offered me a scholarship," Epstein said. "They love the way I run and they love my hands and my speed."
Epstein (5-foot-11, 182 pounds) is a versatile RB with good straight line speed (4.4) who can line up in the backfield or split out in the slot.
Other offers include Cincinnati, FAU, New Mexico, Temple, UCF, and Jacksonville State. At this early stage in his recruitment, Epstein is favoring three programs.
"I want to explore all of my options, but I definitely like Illinois, UCF, and Cincinnati," Epstein said. "They have stood out to me the most so far. I want to hit them up for visits this summer, and I might take a trip to other schools in the Midwest."
Though he is just getting to know the staff - he has been talking to Cubit for a couple of weeks - Epstein likes what he's hearing from the Illini and how they would use him in their offense.
Renowned as one of the top football programs in the nation, St. Thomas Aquinas is coming off of a 15-1 record and FHSAA Class 7A state championship in 2014. Epstein talked about why he decided to transfer.
"It's a great opportunity and great exposure," he said. "I want a state title, and even a national title would be great. I just look forward to competing with the best every day. "
