Washington (DC) Gonzaga entered the 2014 football season ranked No. 23 nationally in the USA Today Super 25. On Friday, the Gonzaga Eagles traveled to Langhorne (PA) to take on Neshaminy High School.
Future Illini running Reggie Corbin helped to lead Gonzaga to dominating 42-3 win with a big game on the ground.
"It was exciting and it was great to be back out there," Corbin said. "I had 8 carries for 192 yards and 2 touchdowns. The first run I had was a 68-yard touchdown."
Corbin, a 5-foot-9, 191 pound all-purpose back, committed to Illinois in late May, choosing the Illini over an offer from Washington State. He had heavy interest from Georgia Tech, Maryland, Rutgers, Duke, and others.
Last season as a junior, Corbin rushed for 1,103 yards and 12 touchdowns. He is looking to build on his season opening performance against Neshaminy, but he isn't taking anything for granted.
"I hope it starts out a great year, but I'm still working hard," Corbin said. "I'm just looking at it like this game never happened and try to keep getting better."
Illini assistant Alex Golesh was the lead recruiter on Corbin, and the two stay in close touch. Corbin got a text message from the Illinois staff after his game on Friday.
"I talk to Coach Golesh and Coach Beckman every day," Corbin said. "Just about every morning they will message me on Twitter telling me good luck. We talk on the phone at least once a week."
Next up for Gonzaga is a nationally televised game at Clifton (VA) Centreville where Corbin will go head-to-head against 3-star RB AJ Turner, a South Carolina commit.
Centreville is the No. 2 ranked team in the nation in the USA Today Super 25. Catch the game live on ESPNU at 7pm CT this Friday, Sept. 5.
