One of the top rushers in the Chicago area, Hinsdale Central senior Christian Bobak stands 6-foot, 190-pounds and was just offered a preferred walk-on spot at Illinois.
"Illinois is a very good school. I'm planning on studying business, so it's good to know they have a very good business program," Bobak said.
Bobak rushed for 1,133 yards in the regular season for Hinsdale Central, averaging eight yards a carry for twelve touchdowns.
"Coach Scheelhaase, the running backs coach is actually recruiting me. It's pretty cool because I remember watching him play for the Illini as a quarterback a few years ago," Bobak said.
Although he's got the speed and versatility to play several positions on the field, the Illini are focusing running back for right now.
"They're looking at me as a running-back, but coach noted that I could play on the other side of the ball as well, if needed," Bobak said.
Bobak has opportunities to play at Valparaiso, Dayton, Stetson, and Lafayette but doesn't plan on taking too long to make a decision.
"Since recruiting started very late for me, I didn't have the luxury of making a decision earlier. I'm still trying to see what other options come up, but I know that I will have to take advantage of the limited time I have to wind down my options and make a decision," Bobak said.
For Bobak, Illinois has always been on his list.
"I went to Illinois football games as a kid so it's exciting to be given an opportunity to play for a Big Ten school and to be fairly close to home," Bobak said.
Recruiting overall is picking up some steam.
"My recruiting has definitely picked up the last few weeks with a bunch of coaches coming in," Bobak said. "Central Michigan is coming to my school after break to work me out at safety. Coach Teavens, the head coach at Dartmouth, was at my house last Sunday to visit for a while. I've also been talking to Lehigh, Georgetown, Brown, Yale, Columbia, as well as the schools that have offered me."
Illinois will get a visit from Bobak and that's the next step in the process.
"I'm looking forward to take my official visits and to see the schools in person. I'm excited to find my home for the next four years of my life," Bobak said.
