2018 prospect Courtney Ramey killed it this summer playing for his father Terrell Ramey on St. Louis-based Ramey-Jets United.
A 6-foot point guard from Webster Groves (Mo.), Ramey showed play-making skills beyond his years, and a natural ability to facilitate from the lead guard spot.
Ramey's rise continued on Sunday, as he picked up an offer from Illinois during an unofficial visit to the Champaign campus. Ramey said Illini John Groce
"Coach Groce likes the way I play," Ramey said. "He said he likes how I can read the pick and roll, score, and pass the basketball. He told me on the visit that I have an offer. It's really big and appreciated."
Ramey got the full tour of the campus and the facilities, including the State Farm Center, which is still under renovation in preparation for the 2015-16 season.
He also got to watch an Illini practice, as Groce prepares his team for an upcoming trip to Europe.
On the recruiting front, Ramey has early offers from Missouri, Illinois, Kansas State, Ole Miss, and Jacksonville State. He visited Arkansas in June, and has a visit set to the local school St. Louis U this week.
Along with fellow 2018 stars Torrence Watson and Carte'are Gordon, Ramey helped lead his 15U squad to the title at the NY2LA Summer Jam in Milwaukee. Ramey talked about his play on the summer circuit, where he has been turning the heads of high major coaches.
"I help my teammates out a lot," he said. "I'm a leader. I know when to score and when not to try to score. I just need to get stronger. I think I've been playing better when players try to be physical with me. I can get my jump shot off in traffic, and get to the hoop."
The sky is the limit for Ramey. One high major assistant thinks he could be end up being one of the top players in his class nationally.
"He's a top 50 kid right now but has the potential to be even more. His team won big at every event this summer and that is large part because of his ability to make plays and make others better around him."
Overall, Ramey said it was a great visit to Illinois. The offer was an added bonus, and the Illini should be strongly in the mix. Another aspect that Ramey liked about Illinois was the proximity to his home in St. Louis.
"I love it," Ramey said about the Illini program. "I'm going to take a really hard look at Illinois. I like that my parents would get to come see me play. "
Sturdy's take: "Courtney Ramey is a dynamic 2018 point guard that knows how to run a team and get others involved but is able to score from all three levels. Still wiry, he needs to get stronger which will help with finishing. Still, he has elite quickness and a tight handle to go along with a high basketball IQ."
