2017 combo-guard Alonzo Verge from Villa Park (Ill.) Willowbrook has his hand full play up with the 17U St. Louis Eagles this spring.
The 6-foot-1 Verge comes off of the bench to lead the second unit for the Eagles, one of the most talented teams in Nike's Elite Youth Basketball League.
"I just try to keep the momentum going that the first group gets going for us," Verge said. "I'm just trying to contribute wherever I fit in and trying to make something happen."
Verge burst onto the Illinois high school basketball scene as a sophomore, averaging 23 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals. He was the only sophomore named to the Chicago Sun Times All-Area Team. He posted 41 points in a late season 94-92 win over Proviso East.
A family connection to the Eagles coaching staff sent Verge south for the spring AAU season, and he sees it as a learning experience and a chance to improve. Verge showed some youth last weekend at Session 1 of the EYBL in Hampton, Virginia, where his team posted a 3-1 record.
"I'm just trying to stay humble, get in the gym a lot, and work on my game," Verge said. "I'm not taking that many shots because I don't' have to. I just try to keep my teammates involved as much as possible."
Verge's game based on high energy, taking the ball off the dribble, and disrupting opponents defensively with excellent lateral quickness. He's been a little rushed and loose with the ball playing up, but he shows flashes of the skills that created buzz during the high school season.
On the recruiting front, Verge is picking up interest from high majors. Some off the court issues have college coaches a bit leery at this point, but he has picked up two offers and caught the eye of Illinois coach John Groce.
"I have offers from Oregon and Providence," Verge said. "Oregon has been talking to my mom a lot. Providence has been recruiting me pretty hard, and there have been a couple of others. I've talked to Illinois. I like Coach Groce and his program, and I would be interested in them if they offered."
