Though a scheduled visit to Illinois this past weekend didn't go off as originally planned, newly offered 2017 prospect Alonzo Verge still plans to make a trip to Champaign.
"I just want to see how everything is there at Illinois," Verge said. "I've never been there before, so I just want to have some fun and check it out."
A flashy, 6-foot-1 combo-guard, Verge is playing up with the 17U St. Louis Eagles this spring on the summer AAU circuit. Next up is Session 3 of Nike's EYBL this weekend in Houston.
The offer to Verge was one of several 2017 offers that Illinois coach John Groce extended recently and Verge said he knows several of the offered players. He also holds offers from Oregon and Providence, but has no plans to name any top schools this early in his recruitment.
"I'm only a sophomore, so I haven't thought about having a favorite or anything yet," Verge said. "I'm hearing the most right now from Oregon, Illinois, Providence, DePaul, and Virginia Tech."
Verge burst onto the Illinois high school basketball scene as a sophomore, averaging 23 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals. He was the only sophomore named to the Chicago Sun Times All-Area Team.
He comes off of the bench to lead the second unit for the Eagles, and says his game is benefiting from matching up against older players.
"It's a learning experience," Verge said. "I'm getting a lot stronger with the ball. I'm passing a lot more than I have usually and my defense is getting a lot better. "
