VandeBerg ready to get started
Matthew VandeBerg agreed to be a grayshirt recruit for the Iowa Hawkeyes, the coaching staff told him there is always a possibility that something opens up sooner. Now, it appears that is exactly what happened as the 6-foot-1, 170-pound VandeBerg received word this week to report to camp on Saturday with the rest of his class. When South Dakota native
"I found out from the coaches on Sunday that it was a possibility, but I didn't want to say anything until I knew for sure and that news came today," said VandeBerg. "I'm reporting to camp on Saturday now."
A standout on both sides of the ball at Brandon Valley High School, VandeBerg could play wide receiver or defensive back for the Hawkeyes. On his visits to Iowa City, most of the conversation has been about defense, but the coaching staff is letting him choose where he wants to start out at next week.
"They said in training camp they are going to put me where I want to be first and that is wide receiver," VandeBerg said. "But if they need help on the other side of the ball, I'll go over defense."
As a senior, VandeBerg put up big numbers with 65 catches for 1,080 yards and 18 touchdowns plus seven interceptions on defense as he led Brandon Valley to an 11-1 record. Now, the two-star prospect will be taking those talents to college at Iowa and has a busy couple of days ahead of him as he gets ready to make the move.
"It is going to be a whirlwind of a week for sure," said VandeBerg. "I just applied for housing and I've still got to register for classes."
"I'm still trying to wrap my head around all of it, but it's definitely very exciting."
