Lincoln smacks South Shore; Takes top spot

BROOKLYN, NY-The battle for the top spot in Brooklyn took place at Abraham Lincoln High School.

South Shore was the visiting team, and both teams were undefeated at the top of the league standings. The Lincoln Railsplitters were 7-0, while the South Shore Vikings had 6 wins and no losses. South Shore left Coney Island without adding to that total. Lincoln played well and had a convincing 73-62 win over the visitors.

Behind outstanding scoring efforts from Isaiah Whitehead and Elijah Davis, Lincoln came out strong in the first quarter and never really looked back as the Railsplitters controlled the game from start to finish. Whitehead really showed all facets of his game by scoring 19 points and setting up his teammates with some nice passes. Whitehead knocked in three triples, while also draining a number of pull-up jumpers. The 6-4 junior guard played solid defense as did the rest of the Lincoln squad.

The 6-5 Davis was the leading scorer for the Railsplitters with 20 points. He started off the game by banging in two three pointers. He scored the majority of his points inside the paint, usually on the finishing end of a break. He was steady throughout the entire game and never forced anything.

Another player who contributed for Lincoln was Desi Rodriguez, but he was only allowed to play the second half because of some type of school violation that wasn't exactly clear to head Coach Dwayne "Tiny" Morton. Still, the junior forward was able to add 8 points in the half while being a force down on the low block.

Lincoln jumped out to a 20-12 lead after the first quarter. They were really hot from outside, with Whitehead and Davis draining shots. They also got a quick burst from Trevonn Morton, who also drained two mid-range jumpers in the period. Morton also knocked in two jumpers in the third quarter, which was when Lincoln really took control of the game.

After going into the half with a 38-32 lead, Morton (9 points) extended Lincoln's lead to 54-45 with a three pointer with about a minute left in the third. Davis scored the last six points of the quarter to give Lincoln a 60-45 lead as Lincoln cruised all the way to the end of the game without any pressure from South Shore.

The game was a frustrating one for South Shore who saw senior guard Terrence Samuel score only one point in the entire game. The UConn commit didn't look like he was ever in sync and was invisible for most of the game, except when he was called for an offensive foul while almost finishing a monster dunk over the top of a Lincoln player. It was that type of game for Samuel.

The best player on the floor for South Shore in terms of putting the ball into the basket was David Tait who scored a team high 20 points. He was solid all game getting the ball in the paint and finishing inside.

Shamiek Sheppard lived at the line for the Vikings, scoring 9 of his 13 points from the charity stripe. Sheppard appeared to be one of the only South Shore players attempting to play with any energy. He hustled all game long despite his team not really being in it for the last 8 minutes. Sheppard's effort level really stood out because he was having a hard time finishing, but he was doing everything full speed.

Lincoln looked very good in defending their home turf. They played together and it was an all-around team effort that allowed them to come away with the win and sole possession of first place in Brooklyn AA.
