Stop the presses - Campbell still open
Editor's Note - See the bottom of the article for the latest update.
For the second straight year, the Longhorns have looked to the recruiting ranks to bring in an influx of talent, and for the second straight year the Texas program has experienced some success in its recruiting efforts.
Hutchinson (KS) Community College linebacker De'Vondre Campbell, who had previously been committed to Tennessee, has decided to sign with Texas, according to a press release issues by the HCC Sports Information department.
Campbell began opening up his recruitment after Tennessee fired Derek Dooley. He took an official visit to Texas on the weekend of December 7 and took another to Minnesota last weekend. Campbell has declined interview requests since re-opening his recruitment, but he spoke highly of both visits on social media.
Campbell is expected to sign with Texas on Wednesday, the first day junior college players can sign with Division I programs. He becomes the Longhorns' 14th commitment of the 2013 class and joins Naashon Hughes and Deoundrei Davis as the only linebackers in the group.
A 6-5, 225-pound speedster from Fort Myers, Fla, Campbell is the first player from Hutchinson to sign with Texas since full signing records were kept by the school following the 1994 season.
Campbell was thrust into action this year in part due to injuries to the HCC defense, and he responded well in playing both defensive end and outside linebacker. He was second on the team in tackles with 88 (22 unassisted). He had 8.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 quarterback sacks. Campbell had four quarterback hurries, three passes broken up, one interception and a forced fumble.
Campbell is Texas' second junior college commitment for the 2013 class, along with tight end Geoff Swaim. The Longhorns also have scholarship offers out to defensive end Za'Darius Smith and offensive lineman Desmond Harrison.
11 p.m. update - Per a source at Hutchinson Community College who spoke with Campbell earlier tonight, there has been no commitment given.
"They're wrong," the source said of the press release issued by the school. "He's still weighing his options, still has visits to take."
