Hawks land second commit

Once wide receiver Derrick Willies picked up a scholarship offer from Iowa, it did not take him long to arrive at his decision. This morning, just four days later, the 6-foot-3, 190-pound Willies made the call to give his verbal commitment to the Hawkeyes.

"I just called Coach Ferentz and told him that I want to be a Hawkeye," said Willies. "That's the program that I want to be a part of."

Willies was born in California, but moved to Burlington, Iowa his freshman year of high school and quickly adopted the Hawkeyes as his favorite football team. At Burlington, the three-star prospect caught 57 passes for 934 yards and 7 touchdowns his junior year, earning second team all-state honors in 2011.

This past winter, Willies transferred across the border to Rock Island High School in Illinois where he will play for new head coach Bryan Stortz this year. Currently, he is competing in track for the Rocks and last year as a sophomore placed seventh for Burlington in the 400 meter hurdles at the Iowa State Track Meet, finishing with a time of 54.86 seconds.

In committing to Iowa, Willies chose the Hawkeyes over scholarship offers from Iowa State, Northern Illinois, Eastern Illinois, and Illinois State.

Willies is the second commitment for the Iowa coaching staff in the Class of 2013, joining four-star defensive end David Kenney from Indianapolis.
