Spring Fling this weekend in Iowa City

While many Hawkeye fans will have their eyes on the spring scrimmage at Kinnick Stadium on Saturday, just down the street, the Iowa Barnstormers AAU program will be hosting their annual Spring Fling at the Fieldhouse. The tournament will once again feature AAU teams from across the Midwest.

"We have teams from Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Minnesota coming in for the tournament this weekend," said Barnstormers Co-Director Jamie Johnson. "We don't have the higher end kids in the older group of kids that we did last year when we had a good team from Indiana Elite, Josh Oglseby and Jared Uthoff, but our younger teams have some kids that have a chance to be high major recruits in the next few years. This will be a good chance to see some kids that people will be talking about in the near future."

The Spring Fling gets underway on Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. with games running all day. The last games of the day will tip at 8:15 p.m. on Saturday with bracket play resuming on Sunday morning at the Fieldhouse in Iowa City.

Admission to the event is $6 for adults and $5 for students. If you plan on attending both days, the cost is $10 for adults and $8 for students. A concession stand will be on site serving food and drinks for those attending the event.

The tournament features play in the 15,16, and 17 year old age brackets with 38 teams participating this year.

The Barnstormers have several players that Iowa fans will be interested in watching, starting with their 16 year old group. That team features Iowa City West players Jeremy Morgan and Dondre Alexander. Morgan is a 6-foot-5 wing player and he is the son of former Hawkeye player Michael Morgan. Another player to watch on their squad is 6-foot-3 point guard Domen Zevnik, who recently moved to the area and is attending Dubuque Senior High School.

"Domen played at a prep school in Florida and moved recently to the area. He was one of the sleeper prospects at a recent AAU event. He is a combo guard who can handle the ball," Johnson said.

The 15's group for the Barnstormers also features some possible high major prospects that could eventually land on Iowa's radar. Some of the players to watch include Kyle Haber, a 6-foot-5 combo guard from Dubuque, Casey Schlatter, a 6-foot-7 forward from Iowa Falls, Matt Nelson, a 6-foot-8 power forward from Cedar Rapids Xavier, and Seth Bonifas, a 6-foot-9 power forward from Dubuque.

"All those guys are getting some early attention from coaches, especially Haber and Schlatter. Minnesota, Nebraska, Indiana, and Wisconsin have checked in on all or some of those kids," he said.

The 15's team also includes Wyatt Lohaus, the son of former Hawkeye Brad Lohaus.

The Barnstormers aren't the only Iowa based AAU team involved in the tournament. Former Hawks Duez Henderson and Jason Price lead the Iowa Pump and Run team that features Danville preps Michael and Steven Soukup. The 6-foot-4 wing players are getting some recruiting attention. On the Pump and Run 15's team, they feature Jalen Jones, a 6-foot-5 player from Clinton, IA that the Hawkeye coaches were impressed by in one of their summer camps.

Johnson said he has yet to receive a roster from the Wisconsin Swing, one of the top AAU teams in the state of Wisconsin. One of the expected prospects in town is 6-foot-9 forward Luke Fischer, who is expected to make an unofficial visit with the Iowa coaches while he is in town.

One last prospect worth checking out is 2012 wing Junior Lomomba from Wisconsin. He will be playing with the Wisconsin Force. He held an offer from Iowa under the previous staff and visited Iowa City in the past.

The action gets underway on Saturday morning, so stop on by if you are in Iowa City and enjoy some great prep basketball action at the Fieldhouse.
