AUBURN | Gus Malzahn spent a year preparing for the Tigers' game against Florida State -- stabilizing the program, installing his systems, refining things throughout the season.
So when the Seminoles walked off the field winners inside the Rose Bowl earlier this week, the Auburn coach struggled to find proper perspective. Getting to that point, one game to win a championship, isn't easy.
Losing that game stings worse than most.
"There's no doubt it's pretty tough when you get that close," Malzahn said Friday. "You've got to find a way to move on. We're looking forward."
He'll also be looking back occasionally.
"We'll work extremely hard to get back there and redeem ourselves," Malzahn added. "You're always looking for things to motivate you. That's a very motivating thing for me."
Auburn's season ended on a sour note. A coverage bust yielded Florida State a 48-yard gain with one minute remaining, which changed the game's momentum in a way that couldn't be reversed. The Seminoles scored with 17 seconds remaining.
