Padla commits to dream school

Earlier this weekend Head Coach Mark Dantonio extended a scholarship to Nick Padla of Berrien Springs High School. It did not take long for the 6-foot-6, 270-pound prospect to make his decision. SpartanMag.com has the details.

Last night Michigan State Offensive Line Coach Mark Staten made the trip over to Paw Paw to watch Padla and his Berrien Springs team play.

It was a tough night for Padla as Paw Paw High rolled to a 36-0 victory over Berrien Springs. However, later that night Padla received some good news from Coach Staten.

"Coach Staten had told me to call him after the game so I spoke with him around 11pm at night and that is when he told me that they were going to offer. he said the big thing was that he watched me in the 4th quarter when we were getting blown out and I was still playing hard. He said that watching me still playing my butt off and not quitting was what made the difference. He said he knows I will work as hard as I can to become the best player I can be."

When I spoke with you earlier this week, you said you might go to Illinois to visit. I assume the offer made you change your mind about that.

"Yes we went to Michigan State today. Once I got the offer from them I figured it did not make a lot of sense to go down there. Michigan State has always been my dream school even before all of this football recruiting stuff so my family and I decided to come there."

How did your family feel about you making your decision.

"They were very happy for me. They knew it was my dream to get an offer from Michigan State they were proud that I was able to make it come true."

How did your actual commitment go down as far as telling the coaches?

"Once I got the offer it was only a matter of time. I met with Coach Dantonio before the game and he asked me if I was ready to become a Spartans and I told him I have been ready my whole life. He congratulated me and welcomed me to the family. Coach Staten and the other coaches were also excited. I also got to meet and talk with some of the other commitments as well."

Coach Staten is not only the Offensive Line Coach, but he is your primary recruiter, can you tell me about the relationship you have with him?

"I have a strong relationship with Coach Staten. He has been recruiting me for over 2-years. He is originally from this area so I know he likes recruiting guys from here that he thinks can play for Michigan State. Coach Staten has been great throughout the whol3 recruiting process. He has taught me a lot as a player and he has always been truthful with me. he has been straightforward with me about what I need to do to improve myself, what I do well and what I need to work on. I want a coach who will tell me what I am not doing well enough so I can improve. He is the type of coach I want to play for."

SpartanMag.com will be sure to keep in contact with Padla throughout his senior season. He hopes to help Berrien Springs get back on track and make a run at the playoffs. He also plans on coming back up to State as often as possible to get to know his future teammates better.

Padla, who is rated a 3-star recruit by Rivals.com, becomes the 15th commitment for the Michigan State class of 2014.
