Minneapolis RB interested in Spartans

Michigan State has not offered a lot of prospect for the class of 2014, but one of the players they have extend an early scholarship to is running back Jeff Jones of Washburn High School is Minnesota. was able to catch up with Jones and get some details on his early recruitment.

The 6-foot-0, 190-pound Jones is a dynamic runner in the open field that can also run between the tackles. With the Spartans graduating Le'Veon Bell after the 2013 season, the staff is looking for a player with elite ability to come in and compete for early playing time. Jones has the talent to be that type of player.

We asked him about his recruitment so far and his thoughts on Michigan State.

"I have 6 offers, Michigan State, Minnesota, Iowa, Iowa State, Wisconsin and Illinois," he said. "I like the program they have and I love what they do there at Michigan State."

Jones is being recruited for the Spartans by Michigan State Recruiting Coordinator Brad Salem. The fact that Coach Salem is serving as his primary recruiter and would potentially be his position coach, if he selected Michigan State, is never a bad thing. Position coaches enjoy being able to recruit players they will be able to work with first hand.

Jones is still very much in the learning stage about all the schools that have offered him a scholarship. He hopes to check out some schools this fall for games, but more than likely he will use junior day visits to get an idea about what each school has to offer and how he fits in. He had the following to say about where he currently stands.

"I am considering all of the schools that have offered me so far," Jones said. "In addition, if I get some more scholarship offers I will try and look at those schools as well. Right now I am wide open."

Jones has stated that his goal is to play in the Army All-American Bowl after his senior year and make his decision at that event. He has already been invited to the combine which will be held this winter.

Jones had a big sophomore year for Washburn High school, rushing for more than 1400-yards and scoring 28 touchdowns. He is hoping to add to improve those numbers this fall, but is mainly focused on team success at this point. Washburn High School is always one of the top teams in the Minneapolis area and this year Jones would like to help his team make a run at the state championship

Jones was also a standout performer at the NIKE Camp held in Illinois back in early June. He was able to hold his own with multiple Rivals 4-star prospects from the class of 2013. Rivals Midwest Analyst Josh Helmholdt had the following to sat about Jones after observing him in action:

"Jones picked up offers from Illinois and Iowa on Saturday but still was out competing with the likes of Ty Isaac and Ezekiel Elliott, and matching up well with those Rivals250 prospects." will continue to follow the recruitment of Jones this fall. It is possible he will catch the Spartans in action first hand when they travel to places like Wisconsin and Minnesota. If he does travel to East Lansing to watch a game we will be sure to get his thoughts on his time at Michigan State University.
