Detroit Guard Still Under the Radar- For Now....
A year from now a lot more people in the basketball world will have heard of the name E.C. Matthews. That is a near guarantee from the '13 Detroit Romulus combo guard. When you're willing to do whatever your coach needs for your team to win good things will usually happen. Someone taught E.C. that a long time ago and it sunk in deep. "I want to be the leader. I'm into leading and doing what my coach needs me to do because I know that is what it will take for us to get to that State Championship game", the 6'4 junior told MusketeerScoop.com, ""Whatever I need to do to help my team win, like right now my passing is a big part of what's been winning us games."
A developing combo who has received interest this fall from the likes of Xavier, Michigan, Arizona, USC, Depaul, Nebraska, and Iowa State; Even with the interest Matthews is still what many would call "under the radar" as he is yet to receive a high major offer, despite being a Rivals Top 100 prospect.
Matthews believes that his exposure is about to go up in a major way however, "I'm pretty sure that Xavier is on the verge of offering me. I think when I get that Xavier offer that a lot more are going to start coming in."
As he leads his talented Romulus team against other talented and tough Detroit teams all season the college situation continues to motivate E.C., in fact it's some feedback that he received from coaches that drives him. Matthews said after talking to college coaches this summer he can sum up his game like this, "I'm a 6'4 guard that can play both positions. I really like passing the ball and getting my teammates involved. I'm not a great shooter yet but that's something I'm working on. My height at point guard is an advantage; I'm working on my body tone trying to get bigger because the athleticism is already there."
After the season is over the three star prospect plans on trying to take a trip back down to Xavier, where he visited in mid-October of this year; as for a first impression, Xavier looked pretty good to the combo guard. "I went down there in late October (after the Musketeer Madness) and I was surprised that it wasn't that big of a college. That's better for me because the teachers will know who I am and be more able to help me." Aside from being comfortable from an academic standpoint Matthews also got along well with the members in the program now, "The coaches say they really like me and that my style of play would fit in well. The players are cool; there are a lot of good guys there. I love the way Tu Holloway and Mark Lyons play."
As for his decision, Matthews is letting the process play out, "I'm taking my time, I think I'll have a better spring and summer (Matthews plays AAU ball for the Nike sponsored "The Family") and see what happens. I think a lot of schools are going to offer me after this spring. I'm trying to find a coaching staff that believes in me, an opportunity to be the leader of the team and play PG where I'm most comfortable."
Inspired words from an up and coming player.
