August Recruiting Roundup
A bevy of news hit the wire in August on the recruiting scene, with several targets visiting Charlotte's campus and another young guard picking up an offer. Niner Report has it all in the August Recruiting Roundup.
Shawn Lester: Perhaps Charlotte's top priority along with 2012 PF Willie Clayton, Lester took a visit to Charlotte Aug. 27 and fit in "really well" with the team, according to a source close to the situation. Lester told the Statesville Record & Landmark on Aug. 15 that he had narrowed his list down to Charlotte and ACC member Clemson. Lester also plays wide receiver for the Mooresville High School football team, where he led the team last year with six touchdown catches. Lester sits at No. 131 in the Rivals 150 for 2012.
Willie Clayton: Clayton looks to be Alan Major's other top priority for 2012 and took an official visit to Charlotte over the weekend. Clayton currently has offers on the table from Charlotte, UCF, Mercer, Mississippi and Georgia Southern. Clayton also took a visit to USF on Aug. 20.
Mike Hall: Hall is another potential Niner for the 2012 class, and recently listed Charlotte inside his top 7, along with Cornell, Virginia Tech, Penn, Northwestern, Harvard and George Mason. The 6-10 Atlanta, Ga. native will visit George Mason Sept. 1, Penn on Sept. 16 and Harvard on the 23rd. He doesn't currently have a known visit set up for Charlotte. Hall comes in at No. 134 in the Rivals 150 for 2012.
Elijah Cooper: Cooper looks to be a bit of a backup plan for the Niners, but that doesn't mean they wouldn't like to have him. The 2012 Pennsylvania guard has seen interest from UMBC, VMI, NC A&T, Quinnipiac, Yale, Navy and American University. He's taken visits to Navy and NC A&T and hopes to set one up for Charlotte soon. He's seen Charlotte first-hand, though, when the Niners have visited the Temple Owls.
Austin Dasent: Along with Charlotte, the 2014 point guard from Olympic High School is seeing a lot of interest from some high-major schools, including South Carolina, Clemson, Boston College, Miami and Virginia Tech. Dasent's father said he doesn't have any offers yet, but expects some to be coming down the pipe soon, probably from Western Carolina. Dasent attended Charlotte's elite camp Aug. 20.
Melvin Johnson: Charlotte is definitely interested in this 2012 6'3 shooting guard and has amped up their recruitment of him lately. According to his mother, Johnson has offers on the table from Virginia Tech, Miami, George Mason, La Salle, Hofstra and South Carolina. Johnson may be a backup plan for Major if things don't work out with local product Shawn Lester.
Tony Nunn: Nunn, a Salisbury product, appears to be a high priority for Charlotte for 2013. Nunn attended Charlotte's elite camp Aug. 20 and blew away the competition. The 6'8, 240 pound prospect also has seen interest from Oklahoma and Tennessee, among others.
Shelton Mitchell: Charlotte gave 2014 PG/SG Shelton Mitchell his first offer on Aug. 19 on an unofficial visit. Mitchell then picked up his second offer while on an unofficial visit to South Carolina on Tuesday, Aug. 23. More recently, Mitchell took a visit to N.C. State on Saturday and has visits planned for VCU on Sept. 3 and Clemson on Sept. 10. Mitchell tweeted that he was very excited about Charlotte being his first offer and that the campus was, "nice!"
This isn't the complete list by any means, but some to keep an eye on with hoops season looming large.
