Sam McLaurin discusses transfer to Illinois

Reports surfaced Thursday morning that 6'8 Forward and Coastal Carolina transfer Sam McLaurin had indicated his intention to spend the 2012-13 school year at Illinois, using the 5th year transfer rule. He would be eligible to play immediately.

McLaurin averaged 10.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per contest in 2011-12 for Coastal Carolina, shooting 65% from the field and 52% from the line. McLaurin is also a solid defensive presence, blocking 153 shots over the past 3 seasons.

He provides immediate depth and insurance up front, where Illinois has to replace Meyers Leonard, who declared for the NBA and is expected to be pick in the first round in June.
