December 23, 2008The stars aligned for a huge weekend of college basketball. Saturday, five games between ranked teams and a couple of upsets gave the day an NCAA tournament-like flavor.
It's only fitting that one of the biggest performers in one of the weekend's biggest games would be named the Rivals.com National Player of the Week.
Connecticut senior guard A.J. Price had 24 points and a career-high 10 assists in the Huskies' 88-83 overtime victory over Gonzaga in Seattle. Prince hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds to send the game into overtime.
Price also scored 13 points with five assists in a 91-57 win over Stony Brook.
Duke guard Jon Scheyer scored 23 points on 9-for-11 shooting in a rout of Xavier. He also scored 13 points in a victory over UNC-Asheville.
Guard Josh Carter helped Texas A&M move to 10-1 with 19 points in a win over LSU. Carter was 11-of-13 from the line. Carter also scored 14 points in a win over SMU.
Oklahoma State sophomore guard James Anderson scored a career-high 33 points and added nine rebounds and four steals in a win over Rhode Island. He had 20 points and six rebounds earlier in the week against Mercer.
Minnesota guard Al Nolen had 18 points, five rebounds and five assists in an upset of Louisville. He was 13-of-17 from the line.
Purdue forward Robbie Hummel had 18 points, 14 rebounds and four assists in a rout of Davidson.
Arizona State guard James Harden scored 30 points and added six rebounds, six assists and five steals in a win over BYU. Harden did most of his scoring damage by going 16-of-21 from the line.
Tennessee forward Wayne Chism had a monster second half in a mid-week win over Marquette. Chism finished with 26 points and 11 rebounds against the Eagles. He had six points and 12 rebounds Saturday against Belmont.
UTEP senior guard Stefon Jackson had two big games to help the Miners get two victories.
He had 28 points and seven rebounds in a 96-78 victory over Texas Tech, then had 33 points and five rebounds in an 84-69 win over New Mexico State. The performance against the Aggies was his third 30-point game this season, and he shot 50 percent from the field (19-of-38) for the week.
UNLV guard Wink Adams hit seven 3-pointers on his way to a 25-point day in a 79-64 win over Arizona. He added four rebounds and three assists against Arizona. Earlier in the week, Adams scored 16 points and added five assists in a win over Santa Clara.
Belmont's Alex Renfroe scored 25 points with six rebounds and four assists in a win over Middle Tennessee. He added 30 points and seven rebounds in a loss to Tennessee.
Osiris Eldridge helped Illinois State extend its record to 11-0 with 14 points, 11 rebounds and four assists in a win over Illinois-Chicago. He also had 18 points, three rebounds and three steals in a win over Central Michigan.
Drake's Josh Young scored 24 points and five rebounds in a 60-43 victory over Iowa. He was 14-of-15 from the line.
A week after recording a triple double, Fortson continued his hot streak against two mid-majors.
Fortson had 20 points, seven rebounds and seven assts in an 89-80 win over Austin Peay. He added 13 points, five rebounds and seven assists in a 67-51 win over Stephen F. Austin.
IUPUI's Alex Young had 18 points and six rebounds in an upset of Seton Hall.
USC's DeMar DeRozan had 18 points, six rebounds, two steals and two blocks in a win over North Dakota State.
Cincinnati's Yancy Gates had 12 points and nine rebounds in a win over Mississippi State. He added 17 points and eight rebounds in a win over Eastern Kentucky.
