Peoria tribe leader doesn't back Chief return
The head of the Peoria tribe says he doesn't support a proposal from former Chief Illiniwek portrayers to bring back the Chief in a limited way, because the idea lacks the University of Illinois' backing.
Tate: Talkin' Scheelhaase
"I feel like I understand the game pretty well, and I like Coach Cubit. My biggest frustration, other than the injury, was how we never established an identity on the offensive side last season. We didn't know who we were."
Jonathan Brown progressing
"It's gotten better," UI coach Tim Beckman said. "He focused a lot on his academics. Jonathan is a good, good football player. There's no doubt about it."
Illini point guard depth is scary
I look at Tracy Abrams and see a tough-as-nails kid who seems almost bulletproof to serious injury. Then I remember that no player is bulletproof. Then I remember that injuries happen. Then I remember Chester Frazier, another tough-as-nails former Illini who seemed immune to serious injury, until, that is, he got hurt and Illinois could not function going into the 2009 NCAA Tournament without him.
Groce positively the right guy for Illini
That the Illini finished 23-13 with the basically the same cast that had gone in the tank for former coach Bruce Weber in 2011-12 spoke volumes about Groce's ability to get the most out of a band of players he didn't recruit. Illini Nation - as well as Thomas and other coaches at the school - took note.
Groce: There's a buzz around Illini basketball
"The word that kept coming out of everyone's mouth was 'excited,'" he said. "There's a lot of buzz. There's a lot of excitement. Momentum is probably the best word to describe it."
Finke recovering from appendectomy
"He's resting fine," said Jeff Finke, Michael's father and Michael's coach on the AAU circuit with the Peoria Irish. "He just had some severe stomach cramps a few days ago that moved down. It was textbook appendicitis. We took him to the emergency room (Wednesday), and they said, 'We need to take it out,' which they did."
